Walk toward Eisenhower Park on a Friday morning and you will run into roughly 30 vendor tents between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., set up on the sand-adjacent stretch near the Seal Beach Pier. Five days earlier, a different farmers market runs its full course in the parking lot at Seal Beach Village, the shopping center next to Leisure World, a market that has been quietly operating on Tuesdays for years without anyone writing a news story about it.

The 2018 Main Street Proposal
The Sun reported that discussion of a farmers market on Main Street dates back to at least 2014, when a columnist wrote in favor of the general concept, though she stopped short of pushing for one specifically in town. The idea resurfaced with real teeth in May 2018, when the City Council heard from both supporters and opponents of a proposal to run a weekly market on the 200 block of Main Street. The city was floating a 90-day pilot period. The Sun ran a letter to the editor opposing it. By June 6, 2018, then-Assistant City Manager Patrick Gallegos confirmed the application had been withdrawn.
The Main Street Proposal and Its Location
In its report on the new market, the Sun quoted Lee Ostendorf saying: "Seal Beach has wanted a farmers market for a long time. They just didn't want to close down Main Street."
That line matters more than it sounds like it should, because Ostendorf isn't an outside operator parachuting in with an idea. She owns Main Street Mercantile, a shop on the very street the 2018 proposal wanted to close. She also runs Local Harvest Farmers Markets and operates five markets a week across the region, including the Bixby Park Farmers Market in Long Beach. She had thirty years of market-running experience and a storefront on Main Street itself, which meant she understood the objection from both sides of the counter. The Pier Market Opens
The Seal Beach Farmers Market launched March 20, 2026, on the Pier near Eisenhower Park, the same park that hosts the city's summer concert series each Wednesday. It runs every Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Seal Beach Recreation Manager Tim Kelsey projected around 30 vendors and roughly 250 visitors per market day when the permit was approved, numbers that held through the summer, with vendors like Gourmet Blends still listing regular Friday appearances as of early July 2026.
Seal Beach Chamber of Commerce board member Peter Magalhaes said the Chamber worked closely with city officials on the Pier market, which followed the 2018 Main Street proposal.
Two Markets, Two Different Weeks
Seal Beach now runs two separate farmers markets, and they serve different parts of the week and different parts of town.
- Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Seal Beach Village Shopping Center. Located next to Leisure World, this certified market has operated year-round for years, tucked into an established shopping center rather than a beachfront gathering spot.
- Fridays, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Seal Beach Pier. The newer market, launched in March 2026, sits inside walking distance of the Pier and Eisenhower Park, drawing produce, prepared food, and local craft vendors organized by Local Harvest Farmers Markets.
